As everyone knows, the movie 'Serenity' is coming out in Sept. Some will start a 'Firefly' like campaign. What vessal would you reccommend and sector?

I would reccomend the 400 ton Fat/Far Trader and maybe in the Deneb sector. If you are using the CT background. Anyone else has a reccommendations?

Boy, no news from Hunter since December 1st and his last post was some time in July I think.

Anyone know how he is doing or how his family is holding up or when he might return to us?

No-one seems to know, he has lost contact with Martin at Avenger, hasn't returned calls or e-mails. Speculation is rife and the subject of much vigorous discussion on two related threads on the bureaucracy forum.

Seems things are particularly difficult and he is out of town a lot but MJD is confident he will return...eventually.

Obviously, he is having a rough go of it. I have had similar troubles in the past, and have found that having an outlet (like Traveller) can be a port in the storm.

It also is a good motivator to rise from the RL muck and return. Hunter will come back, but we Citizens need to give him time to get things in order.

In the meantime, I suggest the Moot and Citizenry organize itself into groups working on specific projects. The least we can do until Hunter gets back is to generate reading to blanket him with! (comedy) There are ships to build, Sectors to Define, rules to dispute, and Errata to find! (comedy)

"I have had similar troubles in the past, and have found that having an outlet (like Traveller) can be a port in the storm."

God, yeah. My last few years have been Hell, and without this place I'd have thrown myself under a train by now. Course, the train would probably have been delayed by leaves on the line or the wrong type of snow, so eventually I'd get bored and crawl off home, but still...

Problem is, IF he comes back (and I don't think it's all that likely that he will), he's going to come back to a ton of outstanding issues that would take ages to catch up on.

For instance, sooner or later he's going to have to renew the DNS thingie for travellerrpg.com. If he's out of contact, how will he do this? If he doesn't, this site goes down and remains inaccessible (unless someone knows the IP address).

I too hope this site stays up, but have no idea if a charatible third party(s) could pay the bill to keep it up.

On time frame, the kind of hardships Hunter appears to be going through take a long time and can drag on and on. I wouldn't reasonably expect to hear from him for at least 6 months. YMMV

I think it's only about six months since Hunter renewed the domain (COTI briefly went offline), so we should be okay for a while. Ideally he should give somebody else the metaphorical keys to the house so he can forget about that and deal with the important stuff. Maybe he already has.

Music to play Traveller by? page 1

I know this subject comes up frequently on the various D&D boards, so I was wondering, does anyone have any favorite music they use to help set the mood while playing Traveller?

It's been a while since my gaming group has played Traveller, but last time we did I would use Michael Oldfield for travel music. When it came time for combat, I would use the three M's: Metallica, Megadeath and Ministry. For bars, I would use music that I felt was appropriate for the bar/starport/world they were visiting -- this varied greatly.

When playing D&D, we use a lot of movie soundtracks. Anyone have any movie soundtrack suggestions for Traveller? The ones I would use were the soundtrack albums from The X-Files, both the movie and the TV series. These were great for building suspense.

Almost anything from Babylon 5 would work for any Traveller Session.

Or is that too commercialised? :(

I mean you have every situation covered with that music.

</font> Regular background music - Just about any used during a nonaction scene.</font> Ship combat - The first combat sequence during the episode when B5 declared independence.</font> Big Ship Combat - The big fight between B5 and Clark's forces in the episode mentioned in item two.</font> A fleet emerging from jump/ambush - The Narn Fleet as it launch the attack on the Centauri supply depot, and the Shadows destroy them.</font> Orbital Bombardment - The bombing of Narn.</font> Narration of a hopeless cause - From the movie In the Beginning which start "The Earthers knew there were doom, but they fought on"</font> Last Stand - any of the Requim of the Line theme variants.</font> BIG Mistake- From the movie In the Beginning when the Prometheous fired upon the Minbari and killing thier leader.</font> Planetary Liberation and Salvation - the scene where all the League and Earthforce ship were fighting to prevent the battlesat from vaping the Earth.</font>The last one would be perfect in the any recreation of the liberation of Capital, as it seems to be suggested in the TNE line MJD is heading. smile.gif

I just bought Peter Gabriel's album, Long Walk Home, which is a soundtrack from a movie called Rabbit Proof Fence, set in Australia. I've not see the film.

The music is sort of ethnic/tribal, yet it has a technological feel to it that seems to me to be a good mix for Traveller.

I like soundtracks, as songs with lyrics can be very distracting...

I've never used music in a tabletop rpg, just as I've never used dramatic lighting, costumes, or props (other than an occasional paper handout). It's distracting, fouls up the organic flow and pacing of the session, and strikes me as just plain, well, extremely cheesy. Tastes vary, of course, and I can see how well-chosen and -placed musical cues might help build moods for 'drama club' type groups, but that was *never* the style of any game I ever ran.

I like faded snatches of things, similar to the ambient background noise in the XCOM series of games, especially Interceptor (worst game but best sounds).

I use 'Rainforest Requiem' for alien planet jungles :)

The soundtrack to the film 'Pi' is good for urban mysteries.

I use elegant choral/operatic music for space battles.... Philip Glass' 'Satyagraya', Yehudi Menuhin conducting on Handel's 'Messiah', good old standby Holst's 'The Planets', Mozart's 'Requiem Mass' is great too. The best is Ricjard Wagner's 'Ring' cycle... 13 hours of epic soundtrack :) Blue Danube Waltz for tongue in cheek space encounters (come out all you Elite players... )

What do you use for alien planets? I use stuff like Ozric Tentacles, Peter Gabriel's soundtrack to the film 'The Passion'etc . I'm interested to know what you might use.

Well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em:

For music to create a vaguely futuristic/sci-fi feel while not overpowering the play (Wagner? The Planets? Who can talk over that?!), try Ambient music -- best bets for starters being probably Brian Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports or the Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (which sounds like it would be a greatest hits CD, but isn't).

Another fun place to look: Crippled Dick Hot Wax records. They're a German company that reissues soundtracks from long-forgotten 'Eurosleaze' movies from the 60s & 70s -- horror, erotica, spy-movies. Lots of very groovy, very spacey stuff, almost all instrumental. Bonus points for not being immediately familiar to your players (except for a couple tracks that have shown up in recent tv commercials). Titles to look for: Vampyros Lesbos, Beat at Cinecitta, vol. 1.

I've gotten lots of milage out of the Conan soundtrack, for fantasy games. For SF I've never really used music but may do so someday. I would probably lean towards techno and ambient, with more specialized stuff (like the Gabriel soundtrack mentioned above) used for specific situations.

For the "Primitive Feast" scene, I'd love to use Japanese Daiko drumming, if I could find a CD of it.

If you want a whole range on a single album, try Massive Attack's disc Mezzanine. Instrumental, vocals, with electro-hip-hop-dub-rock-jazz flavor and a rythym that never stops. It's like the music from the club at the beginning of the Matrix, or what would have been playing in the Mos Eisley cantina if it had been a Cyberpunk story.... graemlins/file_22.gif

AAThat same Massive Attack CD (Mezzanine) has the song that is playing when Neo is asleep at his computer near the beginning of the movie. And that Massive Attack song is not on the Matrix soundtrack CD that I have, just the Massive Attack Mezzanine CD.

The song name is "Dissolved Girl" if anyone is interested. Amazon.com's webpage an excerpt of this and some of the other songs from that CD:

Personally, I am partial to having a strong classical music background, nothing too baroque. Also, I was toying with the idea of having a "Ship's theme" that could be played at the appropriate points in the session. The crew can decide, making music selection fun for all! I also like the idea of having movie soundtracks, but some of them tend to crescendo just at the inappropriate times. John Williams will be banned from my stereo, since almost everything he does harkens to SW. But that is just one Captain's opinion. :D

I like to play Peter Gabriels "Last Temptation of Christ" it has some nice haunting melodies on it and blends nicely into the background.

Worked well for my CoC game.
But I also noted it worked well with several other genre's as well.

Also, it's out of print, but the soundtrack to "kafka" worked well for CoC and actually did'nt do bad with other genre's either.

Best battle musis is "anvil of crom" even if it is a tad short.

For years now I have been using the soundtrack/score from "Full Metal Jacket." The first 8 tracks are stuff from the 60’s and not really very good as game stuff goes, but, when you get to the last tracks it is full of subtle percussive beats, haunting reeds and woodwinds and sudden screeching strings with a touch of feedback. For those of you who own the movie think of the final fight scene in the burnt out building between the Marines and the Girl sniper. Turn the lights down low and play this stuff and the players will be freaking.
I first used it in a Morrow Project game where the characters were in a swamp with 30’ foot long zombie crocodiles and magnesium parachute flares starkly illuminating the moss bedecked scene. My players really got into what was happening. Ever since whenever I pull out that CD my players now we are in for some s**t.
I recently have been introduced to Prokofiev’s "Alexander Nevsky" it was written as a soundtrack for a Russian film about fighting the Germans in the 14th century. The tracks are variously light and playful and dark and ominous. My favorite track of all is the 6-minute "Fight on the Ice." Every time I hear it I wonder where John Williams really got his inspiration. I have yet to hear other Prokofiev but he was a 20th century composer who scored and composed many Russian films, often with Eisenstein, the father of modern film.
Other than that I like the opening music to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Any of the V’ger music is kinda creepy. The Klingon music has great percussives that spice up a battle scene.
Any of the Star Wars albums can be played in the background and usually just set the scene perfectly.
Vangelis, Patrick O’Hearne, Tangerine Dream "Through Metamorphic Rock."
For those of you with streaming audio on the computer I really like Astreaux World.
http://wwwastreauxworld.com
They play a mix that you can let run in the background and not have to buy the albums.

Jean Michelle Jarre's 'Equinox'.

We intensively used background music. Every campaign had it's own recognizable 'Main Theme', and certain situations (Battle, a specific NPC, ...) had their sub-themes.

By the time, this was inflational, it was difficult to find 'new' music.

So we cut it down to a few well-placed pieces of music here and there (every two sessions or so).

I mainly use Soundtracks (am a collector...) e.g. Wing Commander , Stargate, Starship Troopers, Blade Runner, ... but no Star Wars or Star Trek, because it's too associated with the original.

Hmm, well we spent about 2 hours hanging around the bar from the opening scene, got in the middle of some sort of submarine whale-hunt with a band of natives, and IIRC never even came close to the station itself. However, this was in only a single session of play, and I suspect may not be a typical result.

This is less an observation about RSG specifically, and more an observation about where a potential sequel might lead.

Research Station Zeta is in the Five Sisters subsector at Froin.

Candor and Andory, Droyne Worlds, are in the Five Sisters subsector.

Andor and Candory are literally ringed by Naval Bases with a couple of Scout bases thrown in for good measure.

According to Supplement 3, Five Sisters has a population of 1.8 billion with a maximum tech level of C (reached on two worlds).

District 268, in contrast, has a population of 2.5 billion and a tl max of D *AND* was settled first.

What is going on in the Five Sisters subsector *really*? It's in the middle of nowhere, it's not directly connected to the rest of the Imperium, it's got a very strong military presence, it's got an Imperial research station, and it's got two populous Droyne worlds.

Since settlement was stopped during the Psionic Suppressions, I would guess that someone in the Imperial military/nobility/whatever realized that the Droyne are not just psionic, but strongly psionic. Someone perceives them as a threat, so they've been cordoned off and are being studied, both by the scouts and by the research station.
Takei

That's some nice observation if I may say so.

I played RSG, but it was 20 years ago and I don't remember too much about it. I remember we rescued the 'prisoner' and opened just about all the spheres and let everything out to run riot.

Not long after that my character was arrested trying to sell Kinunir plans to the Zho's and spent a long time on Prison Planet :-(

I ran it RSG (too many!) years ago, but it was a bit different from the printed one. In the RSG that I ran, the Droyne leader (Creejoydray?) that went to Vanejen in the Alien Realms product to find out about the Vanejen chirpers had already started uplifting the chirpers into full blown Droyne. Creejoydray had noted the disappearance of the Chirpers and had pieced together the story. He appealed under Imperial law to have the Chirpers released under the Cleon code ('All senients have equal rights'). Of course, the Imperial authorities denied all knowledge and in order to placate the Droyne, set up an inquiry. This determined that the old scientist at RSG had turned rogue. This gave the human players (who 'worked' for the subsector duke) carte blanche to enter the station to rescue the Chirpers. The trouble was that his robots were also a bit more standard than Ling Standard models. All was rescued, the Droyne were happy and Cheery the Chirper was caste as a sport and joined as an NPC for a while.

The general consensus about the bar scene and the criminality involved in RSG shows its weakness as an adventure - but then early trav was often about criminal behaviour.

By the way, war broke out on Vanejen between the human aristos and the Droyne and the Imperial authorities had to intervene big time (Droyne troops - you can't see them but they can see you AND they have psionically aided recon sports - fear the silly little birdies)

Power Projection question? page 1

March 4th, 2007, 01:31 PM
I've got a question about the Power Projection games. Are they suitable for one on one ship "duels" (in the manner of Star Fleet Battles) or are they mainly geared toward fleet actions? The ship to ship model of SFB always appealed to me, but I'm looking for a happy medium in terms of complexity and play time. I'm hoping that Power Projection fits the bill. Any comments?
Hemdian
March 5th, 2007, 09:03 AM
I must admit to not actually having tried just a straight 1-on-1 battle using PP, but in most games I have done the battle does tend to fragment into a series of duels (either 1-on-1 or 1 larger Vs 2 smaller ships). But that might have more to do with the players involved (usually at conventions with people trying it for the first time) and the basic scenarios run (small number of evenly matched ships). Battles tend to have an approach phase (where ships jostle for advantage and much sand is thrown) followed by a combat phase (where a couple of rounds of very bloody combat see one side totally destroyed and the other limping badly). The survivors then repeat the cycle. Games tend to be fun and quick, but very leathal.

I am a disabled vet; I am an experience role player and ref/GM; I have played in and ref'ed most of the Travellar era's; currently living in Central IN, USA. I have been living here for about a year now and am looking for a rpg group to play in or others in this area interested in starting one.

Thanks to all for the welcome. I have looked around and have gotten several ideas already for adventures- just no group to play with!

Ptah: I grew up here; ex had family in Nebraska; I spent 15 yrs there and hated it; after the divorce (long story)I moved back here to Indiana because that was the direction the wind was blowing in! Actually I live close to Columbus, about 50 miles from Indianapolis.

Scarecrow: your right it would be one hell of a commute to play Traveller; Question though "isn't that the idea of Traveller? To go where the adventure is. ha ha"

Fritz88: Since I don't have much of a family anymore (another long story related to my divorce)except my 93 yr old aunt, my Alaskan Husky dog, and my 3 adult children I just might wind up in VA someday!

Thanks again to all for the welcome.

Is there a canon source for Starmerc Tickets?

Since I own LBB4, 76 Patrons and Veterans I have a fairly good feel for normal Mercenary Tickets. (And I finally pried loose enough money to extend my TA/EA subscription so I can add Mercenary Cruiser to the library. smile.gif )

But I was looking for material that would give me a good feel for StarMerc Tickets. I am about to start a Traveller Campaign and I have players lined up that would fit well into a StarMerc campaign. But while I have a good feel for what a StarMerc coes and the type of tickets to set up, I have no clue what fair market value would be for typical tickets.

I was thinking modified Broadsword class or Type-T but I haven't gotten quite that far into planning.

What does Pirate Hunting pay? And of course the Star Merc equivalent of the LBB4 Dream Ticket, Raiding Piracy bases on Grancia. (Deniable assets and all that. smile.gif )

BTW all the Canon Groundpounder tickets don't appear to be capable of supporting the Merc unit having its own starship. Even a ticket for a lowly Type-T is going to be more than the typical Company Ticket by sheer economics.

There are a few sections in GT:SM that cover Star Mercs - called Deep Space Organizations in the book - and four types of ticket for them: cadre, raid, striker, and escort, with one example of each given later in the book.
Salaries are also listed for ship's crew.

I notice in the Linkworlds cluster mini campaign that it states, "The Imperium claims starports as its territory. Starports sometimes have a small Imperial marine garrison, and are subject to Imperial, rather than local law. Assume a law level of 3 at a starport, and whatever the local lawlevel is at a spaceport."

Is this correct? I would think an Imperial patrolled starport would have a higher law level. Just wondering what others think.

thanks,

The Imperial law level has always been rather low. As long as you do not engage in acts of piracy, or play with nuclear weapons, you are okay. Law level 3 is enough to keep people from brining out the heavy military weapons, like FGMP-15's and such.

From my game:

"Dockside is the area surrounding - and open to - the landing bays and construction areas. Law level is about 2 (no explosives or energy weapons), and security is light. If you do cause trouble, though, expect the authorities to call in the Marines."

This is correct, remember the Imperium doesn't like to patrol it's citizens (if indeed there can actually be something defined as an Imperial citizen). It treats starports like most of the rest of the Imperium, don't cause trouble and we won't harass you.

IIRC there are Imperial Starports and local spaceports. The local spaceports have local law levels in effect.
kaladorn
December 17th, 2003, 09:38 PM
If you happen to subscribe to some of the variants that split out the general law level, I'd say the personal military law level is likely a 3 and heavy military maybe even a bit higher. I'm not sure there is much in the way of other restrictions (other types of law) beyond the basics required for quarantine and taxation (and they'd be heartily enforced).

Remember, just because you have a law level of 3 doesn't mean everyone is packing ARs. It is quite possible that you might not see a weapon in a law 3 starport - just because it isn't necessary and is conspicious. You might see some security with them (or stunners) and you know they have Marine reaction teams on backup. But most patrons may opt for either concealed carry or none at all.

There are many places in our societies it might be legal to carry a weapon, but no weapon is carried. Only if there is a sufficient threat climate are weapons carried (in general) and then often despite the law level.
jatay3
December 18th, 2003, 06:59 PM
Some weapons are ceremonial. These might be carried without sufficient threat.

Now...On to the question smile.gif

IMTU If the Starport Authorities do not get a "Hold" or "Search" message from the Local Yokals, they pass everyone with authorization through to their ships.
Trade is the life blood of the Imperium and people need to pass in and out quickly to provide more trade opportunities.
Holding people wastes time and slows trade. The only reason to check people more thuroughly is when there is a "verifyable" threat to security and/or Trade.

IMTU, the starport grounds are sort of like an Imperial embassy... sort of. If you cross the line, you have amnesty, or something like that.

Now, there's nothing to stop a world from XBoating a warrant for your arrest to bounty hunters and neighboring worlds. They just can't touch you on Imperial starports.

Of course, it is up to neighboring worlds to consider what to do about external arrest warrants... probably a very strange dance goes on here, but suffice to say that a sufficiently empowered world might seize upon just such a warrant to press the adventurers into doing business with them.

"We've got a shipment that needs to go to backwater world X. Decline delivery, and we'll have to re-evaluate your ship's spaceworthiness. Make the delivery, and we'll tell Regina that you weren't here. Fail to deliver by next month, and we'll add our own warrant to Regina's."

I suppose those things do pile up. Some players might enjoy gathering as many as possible, to force interesting confrontations. With an understanding referee, that could be pretty fun, actually.

Parmasson,

Wouldn't your answer lie more with the locals level of policing? Will they secure their side of the extrality line/fence/wall with the same vigour as the Imperial SPA?

Your question assumes the locals leave possible the ability for you to get into the starport. Is law level 9 sufficiently high IYTU for the locals to secure all entrances to the starport with Border Guards?

Would the SPA refuse entry to someone who had to shoot their way in?

However, murder is an Imperial crime as well as a crime on most planets. IMTU there is an extradition policy available so that the SPA can hand back real criminals fleeing a murder charge - but it is only used when the Starport Director allows it to be used. After all, she hardly wants criminals to use her 'port as a shield, or be forced to harbor hardened criminals - they would be a threat to the security of her own demense. On the gripping hand, persuade her you are a reasonable person who has either been framed or been forced to do certain otherwise questionable things in a bid to escape an evil regime, and the Director may be sympathetic. Hey, she may even allow you to wander freely in the 'port, and if you manage to arrange passage off-world before her deliberations end, what's that to her? graemlins/file_22.gif

Government by men, not laws, remember?

What's important is the role-playing avenues opened up by this situation - and of course it's really important to make the PC's sweat on whether they'll be allowed to leave... :D

A soft border like the US/Canada only one checkpoint (or it was). Going into Canada face a Canadian checkpoint, coming back to the US face A US border guard. North Korea/South Korea may be a bit different.
My guess is that most planets will not put forth that much of an effort. Its expensive and the Imperium has its own people for that.

I am thinking that if you are going into a starport a basic energy weapons/radioactive materials/known biohazards scanner would sweep as you walked through. Face ID or Imperial RFID cards would exist but no passport control as we know it with somebody there asking you questions with a stamp unless you were from outside the Imperium. More like a subway/underground station security system.
Shadowdancer
October 11th, 2005, 04:47 AM
IMTU, it depends on the local law level. If the local law level is pretty close to the Imperial starport standard of 3, then there's probably only one security station that checks sophonts coming in and out, and they are more concerned about the sophonts leaving the starport for local territory.

If the local law level is significantly higher than the Imperial level, the locals will have their own checkpoint, and they will be tough on sophonts coming and going. If you were good enough to smuggle the items in, you are also going to have to smuggle them out if you want to keep them.

What about public transportation, like monorail, which has a station INSIDE the XT-line? My guess is, that, if they conduct searches at all, the Imperium will check people at the station inside the starport, probably when the passengers leave the train. The locals most likely do the same, but at the last station BEFORE the starport, checking people that want to leave the starport as well as people that want to enter it. (although they technically already have, by crossing the XT-line)

I imagine the whole thing must be lengthy process...

What about people that are rejected entry to the planet/starport? Are they arrested and escorted to the next train reentering the starport/planet?

The Starport would extradite provided that the culprit is tried under Imperial legal standards.

The system in the "Law in the Imperium" article in Challenge 50 establishes the categories of High Justice, Imperial Law, Recognized Law and Local Law.
Prosecution for the first two categories is conducted by Imperial authorities themselves.
For all "recognized" crimes, extradition to local authorities would be a sure thing, provided that the trial conforms to Imperial standards. Recognized offenses cover all the serious crimes such as murder, manslaughter, rape, kidnapping and grand theft.
For local offenses, including minor theft, the Starport IMTU might or might not extradite depending on the rapport and/or treaties the SPA has with the World government - and would of course have its own local laws concerning such offenses as well, should they occur on the Starport grounds.

Other cases in which the SPA might not be willing to extradite is if a possible local trial cannot be expected to conform to Imperial standards of fair trial, or if they decide to prosecute a crime which is defined both under Imperial and local laws (such as murder) in an Imperial trial.

Tobias

Parmasson, I'd think law level 9 on Regina would be high enough for the locals to bother. I'm thinking more like at airports, currency transfer restrictions, posession of resrticted goods, quarantine restrictions etc etc. Australias are pretty strict.

Using CT wouldn't you have to roll over 9 on 2d6 to NOT be hasseled by the locals? That's not an easy task.

In other words, if we make Serenity a hit, we'll apparently be talking about two more Firefly movies.

Still, *more* Firefly is shiney indeed.

Hey folks...

I can't tell if it's me or the Apple Trailers site. Is the trailer viewable yet?

When I click on Large or Full Screen it just takes me to a nearly-identical window with a Back button in the very middle...

Thanks,
Dan

Whoa! That trailer was awesome. Shiny! River knows some mean Kung Fu - Trinity eat your heart out. :D

P.S. While you're at the Quicktime trailers site, check out the trailer(s) for The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Looking good as well (but in very a different way).

personally i cant wait for Kingdom of Heaven. always been a fan of the crusades and the knightly orders that fought it.

Serenity i think will be awsome, I loved the series having had the chance to see it all on dvd and cant understand how it could have been cancelled. tbh it reminds me of traveller more than a little.

Not fair. Have to wait til November in the UK. That means for two months I'll have to avoid threads like this and try and resist the temptation to download. And it's going to cost a fortune, because I'll have to go at least 5 times.

Well, coming out from my rock, can someone enlighten me about what "Firefly" is?

Firefly is the name of a ship class, Serenity being the name of the ship from the short lived TV series "Firefly" that takes the crew around the planets of the recently war-torn federation(?). The characters (crew and passengers) and ship, and their "work" as free-traders is very Travelleresque and the series was well loved by everyone but the short-sighted bureaucrats in TV-land who cancelled it after a few episodes because it did poorly in the ratings game. No help that same said low-IQ bureaucrats all but guaranteed the low ratings by insisting on starting with not the first episode, or even all of them in order, but the one with the best "car-chase" and "shootout", cause that's what Amerika wants right. Then I think they got worried that despite the plan an audience was growing and they started changing the night and time, and skipping weeks by having other programming. Typical. So in the end they cancelled it without even showing all the episodes in most markets. Bitter? Moi? No, not much graemlins/file_28.gif

The good news is it's all on DVD :D

The better news is that the movie exceeded my high expectations. It is, by default for the time being, The Traveller Movie.

Well, if they aren't going to release it over here until November they are just asking for film piracy.

When are they going to learn to release films like this simultaneously - or at least within a couple of weeks of each other?

I wonder when the US movie DVD will be available? ;)

Bizarrely, the Netherlands get the film only a week after the US, but everyone else has to wait at least another month.

Can't find a DVD release date. Possibly Xmas.

Who's up for a trip to Holland then - and I always thought I'd visit Amsterdam for a different reason ;) graemlins/file_23.gif

But then again, the pirates will make such a trip unnecessary for most people.

When will the suits learn...

Does anyone know of any online gaming opportunities (such as a MUSH or a MUX) that are based on any of the Traveller rules? Even loosely?

There are several PBEM, play by forum/post, and IRC / IM games online based on Traveller in either setting, rules, or both.

No MU* or MUSH games that I am aware of. I suggest you make a post in the Recruiting Office (http://www.travellerrpg.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=38) section here on CotI.

I personally have thought about writing one. Though I ran into several problems with the concept. The biggest being time, not personal time but time within the game. I mean if we went with real time then once you got into jumpsapce you would not be able to play for a week. If you speed up time for some then interaction would cause other problems. The second problem is permission to create such a game. (Especially if I want to make a profit. smile.gif ) While I have yet to ask for permission, I am not sure of the reception I would get. I figure if I can fix the first problem at least in a theoretical sense then the second problem would be the next step. But I am looking at it. (And I would prefer to be graphics intensive instead of text intensive. smile.gif ) I know thinking big.

(And I would prefer to be graphics intensive instead of text intensive. smile.gif ) I know thinking big. I had worked on a Traveller MUSH using Pennmush until the DB was stolen along with my computer (yes, no backup). I had actually used real-time, so it would take a week to travel to another system.

However, because of third-party tools, etc. communication couldn't be controlled as well. I think this is why Traveller would never make a viable MMORPG. The Traveller universe is so dependent on the speed of communication being limited to speed of travel and it would be impossible to enforce this aspect fo the game.

I think the best use of a MUSH for Traveller would be as an online RP meeting place and tool kit. Adventure material, locations, etc. could be 'built' by the Ref. Also, commmon mechanics like task, combat, etc. could be softcoded into the MUSH for use by Refs and players. Hmmm....maybe I should compile a new DB.....

I disagree that a MUSH wouldn't work for Traveller. It all depends on how it's handled. One could easily run a MUSH where there was no actual interactive, real-time space code, and instead do it all by adjudication. That way, the problems with time and communication wouldn't matter. It would be staff-instensive, but all good MU* are. Any coding systems should be there to enhance and guide RP, not dictate.

As for profit, if such a MU* were stood up, I doubt very much that there would be a large player base, as the vast majority of MU*s are free.

Well I did say I was looking beyond a simple MUSH. However you are right I don't see enough of a market to really make it worth the time and energy it would require to do the work. It may be a labor of love, but since I am not independently wealthy I have to direct my time and energy to things that will actually make me money. :(

Most of these projects can't be created with just one person. A team helps tremendously, as does someone with free access to a server to host the game smile.gif
