Traveller MUSH?? page 1

Does anyone know of any online gaming opportunities (such as a MUSH or a MUX) that are based on any of the Traveller rules? Even loosely?

There are several PBEM, play by forum/post, and IRC / IM games online based on Traveller in either setting, rules, or both.

No MU* or MUSH games that I am aware of. I suggest you make a post in the Recruiting Office (http://www.travellerrpg.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=38) section here on CotI.

I personally have thought about writing one. Though I ran into several problems with the concept. The biggest being time, not personal time but time within the game. I mean if we went with real time then once you got into jumpsapce you would not be able to play for a week. If you speed up time for some then interaction would cause other problems. The second problem is permission to create such a game. (Especially if I want to make a profit. smile.gif ) While I have yet to ask for permission, I am not sure of the reception I would get. I figure if I can fix the first problem at least in a theoretical sense then the second problem would be the next step. But I am looking at it. (And I would prefer to be graphics intensive instead of text intensive. smile.gif ) I know thinking big.

I had worked on a Traveller MUSH using Pennmush until the DB was stolen along with my computer (yes, no backup). I had actually used real-time, so it would take a week to travel to another system.

However, because of third-party tools, etc. communication couldn't be controlled as well. I think this is why Traveller would never make a viable MMORPG. The Traveller universe is so dependent on the speed of communication being limited to speed of travel and it would be impossible to enforce this aspect fo the game.

I think the best use of a MUSH for Traveller would be as an online RP meeting place and tool kit. Adventure material, locations, etc. could be 'built' by the Ref. Also, commmon mechanics like task, combat, etc. could be softcoded into the MUSH for use by Refs and players. Hmmm....maybe I should compile a new DB.....

I disagree that a MUSH wouldn't work for Traveller. It all depends on how it's handled. One could easily run a MUSH where there was no actual interactive, real-time space code, and instead do it all by adjudication. That way, the problems with time and communication wouldn't matter. It would be staff-instensive, but all good MU* are. Any coding systems should be there to enhance and guide RP, not dictate.

As for profit, if such a MU* were stood up, I doubt very much that there would be a large player base, as the vast majority of MU*s are free.

Well I did say I was looking beyond a simple MUSH. However you are right I don't see enough of a market to really make it worth the time and energy it would require to do the work. It may be a labor of love, but since I am not independently wealthy I have to direct my time and energy to things that will actually make me money. :(

Most of these projects can't be created with just one person. A team helps tremendously, as does someone with free access to a server to host the game smile.gif
