The words players fear most page 1

So, what are the phrases that strike fear in the hearts of the PCs when uttered by the referee/GM? (Or should, at any rate!)

To get the ball rolling:

- "Roll for initiative!"
- "Hmm, this should be interesting..."

I find two old standby's for grabbing lagging attention at the table always fun graemlins/file_23.gif

scenario 1:

GM chooses one of PC's at random and asks them to roll a check. GM may also roll some dice at the same time. GM says something like "Hmm, OK, please continue." Player's paranoia and interest heightened (Did something see us? Hear us? Did we miss something? Look again!) graemlins/file_21.gif

scenario 2:

GM rolls dice on table (not the book as usual) behind screen, loud noise of dice attracts interest, GM scribbles some notes (behind screen), rolls some more dice on table (in case not everyone has noticed) and makes some more doodles (behind screen), looking up at the players the GM asks what each character is doing or where they are then makes one more roll and some notes before returning to the point in the adventure where they were (again with more player interest and paranoia) graemlins/file_22.gif

"It smells like... DEATH!"

After two sessions my players are learning that the ref rolling dice behind the screen, followed by the the words "oh my" usually do NOT bode well....

In the same vein as far-trader's suggestions - at random intervals, I like to ask for clarification of ambigious actions ("okay you're climbing down the ladder. Where's your shotgun again?") followed by a die roll or two. Rolling dice for no apperent reason before a door is opened is usually good too.

I'll also call for the occasional roll against INT - sometimes there's something to notice - sometimes there ain't.

I see we have some old Paranoia GM's around....

Some other ones:
"It seems quiet enough."
"It'll be a milk-run."
"What could possibly go wrong?"
"The NPC seems honest enough."
"What could possibly go wrong?"
"It's just a routine inspection."
"You're in the middle of a civilized area. Do you really think you need to be carrying a boat load of guns?" (Correct answer: YES. DUH!)
"It's quiet and everything is running just like it is supposed to."
"Oh.... hmmmm..... Where did you say you were standing? Exactly?"
"Who's on third watch?"

"You didn't find any traps."

"What is your AC when flat-footed?"

"Make a saving throw."

" ...could I borrow a couple dozen of your dice? I don't seem to have enough for this next encounter."

"....oh,.....er,.....wow,....*shakes head*"

"why don't you guys take a 15 minute break, I need to make sure that this all supposed to happen to you at this point..."

"Holy Sh*t!! I'm rolling hot tonight!!!
*rubs hands together*

...and, finally, if the group has somehow been successful despite the GM's best effort:

"great job, guys!....but, were you expecting this ?!!!" ***sound of handfulls of dice***

The sad part is that I seem to run across one of these phrases on a weekly basis!

Wouldn't it be easier to recreate the maps and counters for all the games in Paint Shop Pro or something, and then post them on the site for download?

*SHOCK* Game companies miss announced delivery dates?! AND customers bitch about it?!? Elvis forfend!
WendellM
March 31st, 2002, 01:21 AM
I thought I was being lenient by saying "the first half of March," since the actual announcement read (and still reads) March 8. But here it is, the end of March, with no books.

I sent in my payment to my favorite online game dealer (the closest thing I have to a FLGS) right before March 8th to ensure fastest shipping, so I have a couple of other games awaiting shipment at the same time he gets the newest FFE books (that's OK - I always order in bulk to save on shipping, so I wouldn't have ordered the games except to ship with the two new FFE books, anyway). But, I must observe that the March 8 ship date was announced on or about February 13 (when I first posted). That's less than a month beforehand. I happen to work at a print/copy shop, so I know all too well what can go wrong. But there's no way that we'd promise a client a product by the 8th of a month and fail to deliver it by the end of that month. If our print shop were capable of turning out the quality of product that FFE 001-005 represent, I'd be hawking our wares to the estimable Mr. Miller, but we aren't, so I don't. But, I might humbly suggest, with no offense intended, that he might look for another printer that can meet ship dates (or at least come close). I know the grief that our customers give us if we're only a *few days* late: a three week delay would certainly see them taking their business elsewhere.

Now, I'm a big fan of the reprints, and I don't want anyone to get the idea that I wish them harm. It's my affinity for them, in fact, that makes waiting so hard. We saw a delay from the initially announced date of December, but then to see an early March date announced in mid-February, then see it come and go... I don't blame FFE/Marc Miller - I don't care about blame at all. I just want to see those great books! http://www.farfuture.net/ixs/smile.gif

The big reason I am feeling impatient about the release is that I am not looking forward to the Journal Reprints (though I will buy them the moment they show up), I am looking forward to the Modules and Alien Modules.

I am still concerned that Mr. Miller is going to just bag the whole effort before he gets to the pieces I really want to see.

The red-cover PDF's are multiplyin'!! :D

Will this keep happenin'?

Is the CT support in these books a cursory afterthought, or is the dual-statting complete and consistent?

I presume the deckplans are of the print-and-play variety?

Do any of the adventures come with nice subsector maps that are ready-to-print?

And I get one of the adventures if I join the moot??

(I'm not lookin' to pester Hunter or MJD here... just lookin' for a word from a hopefully satisfied customer!)
Flynn
June 14th, 2005, 09:32 AM
Depending on the source, dual-statting ranges from complete to somewhat complete. All of the Avenger product line, so far, includes complete dual stats. Much of the QLI product line has complete or near-complete dual stats (except for ships, which are mostly given in the T20 easy-to-read table that translates relatively easily to other systems.)

Many of the adventures come with nice subsector maps that are ready-to-print.

And when you join up, you get one of the QLI adventures (not the Avenger ones, different company, technically) as a freebie for supporting the moot.

I would definitely expect the PDFs to keep coming, as the adventure production process has been streamlined somewhat and is becoming more consistent.

Hope this helps,

The work i'm doing (golden age starships and the golden age epic trilogy set in D 268) the NPCs are dual statted. The ships are dual statted in the golden age starships line (high guard and T20). In the golden age epic line they are not, but that should not matter because T20 stats are virtually identical to HG stats anyway.

Yes. Golden age epic 3, the completion of that trilogy, I am currently writing.

Golden age starships 6 is currently being written. More are planned.

HiYa!

You know I never looked for an introduce oneself spot in the forum.

So. Who is this poster?

A Traveller since the LBBs. Off again, on again depending on the vagaries of life. I’m a one trick pony, a Traveller junkie with a capital T. I don’t do DnD or anyother RPG. That would be cheating. When I wasn’t playing Traveller regularly, I was dreaming Traveller. The first thing I do in any new programming language is build a command-line Traveller world-building program.

When the above isn’t happening I’m at a DMB concert or kayaking in the Puget Sound. Oh and one has to work to eat.

Now you know and can, therefore, be prepared when you see n2s on the board.

Had an interesting thought about the origins of the jump drive... page 1

pwilcox
September 24th, 2004, 11:02 PM
At least, as far as the Solomani are concerned. In the OTU, jump space is quite hazardous. Just looking at it can cause serious mental disorders, so all portholes are covered during transit. I imagine that the designers of the prototype jump ship were unaware of this fact. Now, using the 'jump webbing' theory I've heard - that is, there is a lattice-like structure built in to a ships' hull that creates a jump bubble when energized - suppose that this web also protects the crew from harmful energy rays/pulsations/etc that emanate in jump space?

Where am I going with this? Well, imagine what would happen to the crew of the first jump ship; a ship that was not equipped with such protections. What would happen to the crew?

To find out, go and watch the movie Event Horizon.

[This is just an idea that struck me like a brick to the head while I was at work today, do with it what you will...]

I always though the legendary Philadelphia Experiment was an accidental discovery of the jump drive. It failed on several reasons

1. In a gravity well
2. Improper energy timing sequence
3. Unbalanced wiring with impurities

Martian Metals ID Help #2 page 1

SgtHulka
April 16th, 2002, 11:27 AM
Okay, I just finished painting up a second batch of old Martian Metals figs, and I was hoping you guys could help me ID these.

The figures are wearing loose-fitting clothing/fatigues, with power packs/lifesupport packs, and almost Turkish-looking head-dresses that I'm guessing are supposed to be helmets. They have no faceplates, however. This could be the artist trying to represent "clear" faceplates. Several of the figures are armed with what look like Auto-Rifles; one is throwing a grenade. A majority of the figures are armed with big, pipe-sized weapons attached to their powerpacks with a power line. Three of the figures are armed with a different type of rifle...maybe a Gauss Rifle (it's not an ACR b/c it's not in a bullpup configuration). These three are distinguished from the rest by billed caps on their helmets (maybe they're officers?).

Any clue what these guys are supposed to be? I'm guessing the fatigues are supposed to be Combat Environment suits and the pipe-guns are PGMP-12's.

Since I'm primarily intending to use the figures with AHL, I'm rating the armor as Combat Armor instead of CES and I'm treating the pipe weapons as Laser Carbines so I can use the figures as "intruders" to go against my Imperial Marines.

One of my idle past time is to watch YouTube but I am amazed at the lack of Traveller presence there is. I don't have the equipment to make a short, but, I am surprised that Traveller gaming groups out there have not sought to broadcast a LARP or real play or at very least put some of Andrew's pretty movies up there.

So, hopefully once I get back with a regular gaming group, we might see something broadcast, in the meantime, others with equipment & talent get to it. For Dungeons & Dragons outstrips us by far.

One-ton cockpit maybe, and another two tons max for each engine, so a five-ton recon craft, maybe.

Sort of, kind of like this:

Regarding Traveller web presence, if anybody casually interested Googles Traveller all they get is the forums and the product line websites, all very wordy and not particularly inspiring. People need visual stimulation nowadays or else they lose interest quickly.
What would be cool would be an independent visual intro website to the Traveller universe(s) with a quality gallery of art, models, movies, maps, fiction, etc. donated by the extemely talented CotI collective.
This would be linked to the Wiki, all the important sites and give an initial feel to what Traveller is all about. If it looked professional, contemporary and was quality controlled it could do a lot to remedy the slight image problem that Traveller has,(admit it, it does).
If this was treated right it could be very impressive. If you look at some of the Eve Online or WoW fansites it's amazing what few amateurs and a lot of enthusiasm can accomplish.

Just as when we make our way to the Stars just as the Vilani did before...we will domesticate whatever is in the natural environment for a subsistance economy. Or else we gene modify all creatures to meet our needs like groats in CT.

The Third Imperium and Civilian Uses for Nuclear Bombs page 1

Jeff M. Hopper
January 20th, 2006, 08:20 PM
Nuclear bombs are very useful for civilian applications, asteroid moving and continental scale excavation projects to name just two. With the use of Nuclear Damper technology, the fallout and contamination can be held in check as well from these "civilian nukes".

So, how does the Third Imperium regulate these? Are they even regulated? Could the regulation of "civilian nukes" be a job for nobles, an Order of Knighthood responsible for these?

What say you?
Whipsnade
January 20th, 2006, 08:52 PM
Jeff,

Dampers will 'check' fallout and contamination in two ways:

- They'll 'freeze' the decay of those isotopes that release radiation or
- They' 'speed up' that decay and 'force' the isotopes through their decay paths to a more stable element.

If 'freezing' is employed, the radiation doesn't go away. It's merely held in abeyance(sic) by a damper 'dam' of sorts. Lose power to the damper and radiation will begin just like it should have.

If 'speeding up' is employed, you really don't want anyone to be around during that period. Just how long that period will be is open to conjecture.

Who 'holds' civilian nukes? Anyone who can make them I'd guess. Use them for canal digging - wiht suitable precautions and warnings - and the Imperium won't care. Use them carelesly and the Imperium might just take them away. As with anything in the OTU, it all depends on the specific situation.

I still think it depends on the situation. The Imperium doesn't have a "Nukes only for the Imperium" policy, it has "Only the Imperium can use nukes in war" policy instead. And that policy is winked at regularly.

So, it depends on the situation. Glisten needs to move a planetoid so it use a nuke. I don't think it would need to apply for permission, fill out paperwork, host an inspector, and otherwise kowtow to the Imperium. As a hi-pop, hi-tech, subsector capital, and ducal seat Glisten IS the Imperium. Why should Glisten go through the motions of asking itself?

Now Marastan is another situation entirely. Balkanized, poor, and low tech, a nation there would likely have to import the kind of high-yield 'clean' nuke one uses for civil engineering. The Imperium would be very interested in that case. Marastan would have to jump through all the hoops you mentioned and maybe many more.

So, as with many thing in the Real World, the answer depends on who you are.

Have fun,
Bill

In Canon:

My best guess is that INI groups attached to the office of the noble assigned to the planet (or to an office in the Starport) does the nuclear regulatory/watchdog thing.

Perhaps the office of the noble works on it, as well. After all, it's got to be embarrassing to be the focus of that kind of attention from your superior nobles above you and from the IN.

It's only a guess, but I'm willing to be that reports for all major nuclear incidents cross the Emperor's desk at some point (even if it's one or two years later).

Lower TL member worlds could request Imperial aid when faced with nuclear terrorism. (I bet a densitometer could locate the fissionable material that are the core of fission bombs and the triggers for fusion bombs pretty easily.)

I can't recall a specific reference that defines this role, so it may be open-season.

IMTU:

I3 (Imperial Interstallar Intelligence), ISS (Imperial Secret Service), and INI work on this subject. This is done via the attaches from these three groups in the noble office on the world (lower pop worlds, 0-4, may well not have much of a presence from any of the above three groups).

WHile I've not seen the game, a toughness save system would be quite feasible.

I've been toying with the idea for a while. Use A toughness save vs stamina or stunned. Con save versus Lifeblood or wounded.

Stun is penalty next round. Goes away.

WOund:
Fail by 1-4: Light wound. -1 to everything
Fail by 5-9: Moderate wound. -5 to everything.
fail by 10-19: Severe wound. -10 to everything
Fail by 20+, or fail by 11+ and natural 1, Dying.

Apply wound penalties even to further wounds.

Yes, striker influenced!

I bought the download and am still looking through it. Most of it is distilled d20, which seems to remove some needed parts (experience, leveling, wealth system are the three stumbling blocks I've run across), while keeping the adventuring. I'm comparing it with the WotC Dungeons&Dragons Basic Game as an entry level RPG - both are similar in writing tone.

Traveller20 could be modified for it, fairly easily I think from what I've read so far. The only catch would be some of the "staples" of Traveller, like world-building, would have to converted entirely to d20 which could be a bit problematic.

What were you thinking of using True20 Traveller for?

Worldbuilding (like ship design) is an entirely separate subsystem of the ruleset. All you need to do is convert the effects of worldbuilding (ie environments) to d20, not the worldbuilding system itself. Ditto with ships - use the current method, but convert the stats to d20. Heck, T20 does this already anyway.

The random number averages for 2d6-whatever+whatever come out differently than the random number averages of d20. It'd take a little work to get the same results from a different dice mechanic. This is True20, the goal would be to create a system that only uses the d20. Not saying it'd be impossible mind you, it'd just take a little work.

True, but then T20 uses a mix of d20 and 2d6 to generate worlds.

Given that T20 is aimed at the d20 crowd and still uses d6s sometimes, is it just too much to expect from the True20 lot that they could remember those cubic dice they have lying around somewhere? ;)

On the personal level, True20 could be used quite easily. It's main stumbling block is scaling between personal/vehicle/starship as it doesn't have any vehicle rules IIRC.

Psionics are handled in much the same way as Flynn's(?) rules, with each talent being a skill which is rolled when you want to do something. Which is also pretty much like Force skills in SWd20.

There is no experience system. True20 came from Blue Rose where the attitude to levelling was "the GM tells you when he thinks you've done enough to level."

There are no class or cross-class skills, just known skills, which are all at your level +3.

Hi All!

I'm new to Traveller, sort of. Actually, I bought the Deluxe Traveller boxed set somewhere back around 1980 and facing a lack of willing players I entertained myself with generating characters, worlds, ships, etc. until that faded and was replaced by other activities. Alas, that old boxed set fell victim to one of my wife's basement purges back before our last move.

I stumbled across the T20 site which renewed my interest. I played an Alternity (Dark*Matter) campaign with a group from work who are also into AD&D3e and might be likely victims for T20 Traveller leveraging their familiarity with the d20 mechanics.

So, I bought the CT books 0 - 8 reprint and TA#1 and have started getting reacquainted with Traveller. So I'm back to generating characters, worlds, ships, etc. My wife wonders what I'm doing sitting at the kitchen table rolling dice and scribbling strange annotations on a pad of paper after she and the kids have gone to sleep.

During my first flirtation with Traveller, "Canon" was just something players might get killed by. (sorry, bad joke) Now I see a lot of messages and sites concerned with reconciling adventures, ship designs, etc. with the Traveller canon. I'm a little overwhelmed by all the material and history that has been developed in a couple of decades.

After all that, here is my simple question. While I'm waiting for the release of T20, where should I start to look for appropriate background material from which to prepare some adventures and provide some background for my unsuspecting vict- er, players?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dean O.

For one-stop shopping, your biggest bang for the buck would probably come from FFE002 "The Classic Supplements," which includes Supplements 3 & 10 (The Spinward Marches & Solomani Rim) for canonical settings, Supplements 8 & 11 (Library Data A-M & N-Z) for canonical background info, and Supplements 5, 7, & 9 (Lightning Class Cruisers, Traders & Gunboats, & Fighting Ships) for canonical ships & flavor text. Depending on your ambition/finances, FFE003, FFE004, and FFE006 (The Adventures, The Short Adventures, and the Journal of the TAS 1-12) all provide lots more canon in rough, undigested form for you to wade through (much, but not all, of which was eventually compiled to form the aforementioned Library Data).

Other helpful sources are the GURPS:Traveller rulebook (which repeats/updates most of the Library Data) and/or the MegaTraveller Imperial Encyclopedia (ditto) and Referee's Companion (which includes longish canonical essays on robots, corporations, and aliens). Alas, the latter two are long out of print, but still show up on eBay pretty frequently.

But really I wouldn't advise getting too hung up on canon. If you subjugate your own creativity to worries about what someone else has already said or done, then the canon is defeating its own purpose -- it's there to stimulate your imagination, not to stifle it. Unless you're sumitting something for publication, no one need ever know if you deviate from 'official' fleet structures and uniform styles, or even basic history and physical laws! Steal the bits you like and nevermind the rest.

FFE002 has been on my shopping list and from what you've written it seems like a good plan. The other item I thought about was FFE004 "Double Adventures." Not knowing where T20 will be going and being unfamiliar with the "Gateway" region (which I think I read about somewhere in connection with T20) I didn’t know whether to invest much in the classic Traveller materials or wait for T20.

The group that I'll try to recruit will likely do a little research on their own and I'd like for what they find to be not too far off from what I might provide them myself.

Thanks again.

FFE002 "The Classic Supplements" is well worth your money even if only for "Library Data." As far as a setting, you can go with the Gateway sector (once it comes out) or the Spinward Marches. My favorite treatment of the Spinward Marches is GURPS:Traveller Behind The Claw. The map isn't as good as it could be, but it has much more detail on the various systems and worlds.

In my opinion the best place to look for inspiration for your Traveller campaign has always been your local paper (and the New York Times) if your town is truely small.

But more in line with what I guess is your real motives might I suggest a trip through www.webbrain.com (http://www.webbrain.com) with Traveller as your starting place.

Gateway Quadrant was originally detailed by Judges Guild in their licensed Traveller products from the late 70s - early 80s. By the time Atlas of the Imperium was published by GDW (c. 1984) all the JG material was officially de-canonized and the sector maps redrawn from scratch. Other than those maps and the (very rare) 4th/final issue of Digest Group's MegaTraveller Journal, nothing else had really been done with Gateway Quadrant until Hunter et al. began working on T20.

So, if you read through the Library Data to get the Big Picture view of the Imperium, its history, and its neighbors, and take a look at the maps on Anthony's Maps Site (http://maps.grandsurvey.com/map.html)* (which are much better than those in the now-long-oop AotI anyway), you'll know just as much about Gateway Quadrant as any of the rest of us (T20 playtesters excepted), which should be more than enough to allow you to convincingly fake it until the T20 Milieu book comes out this fall.

It's also worth noting that if you do pick up FFE004, you'll find that most of the Short Adventures (although all given specific locations in the Spinward Marches or Solomani Rim) are sufficiently small-scale and self-contained that they can easily be relocated to any other world with similar UWP characteristics -- in Gateway Quadrant, your own homemade TU, or wherever.

*On this map Gateway Quadrant is the four sectors on the far right edge in the middle: Ley, Gateway, Glimmerdrift Reaches, Crucis Margin. Crucis Margin seems to still have the old Judges Guild map/data, but the other three are all 'canonically sound.'

Thanks to everyone for all the great pointers.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned these forums! The response to my questions have been terrific.

Now I've got a plan and good pointers to great resources.

Don't be surprised if I pop up again and ask more questions.

Thanks.
