Traveller Snack Foods/Meals page 1

Well, this occured to me yesterday as I was watching Poltergeist 2 and eating peanut butter and crackers. What are some of the more popular snack foods or meals (aside from specially prepared K'Kree) in the Imperium or Traveller universe?
Mythmere

Canon snacks or IMTU snacks?

You always have Astroburger as the most popular fast food in the Spinward Marches.

Other than the eternal Deep Fried Mars Bar?

There were mentions of coffee, wine and Groat cheese, I think in cannon. Also, a twizzle stick by Norris in his interview.
Jame

Mythmere, I think I meant canon, but IMTU foods would be welcome. Are "Twizzle Sticks" related to Twizzlers? :D

There is always the ever popular Soylent snack line!

And then there's the line from Judge Dredd, "Eat recycled food; it's good for the environment and okay for you!"

You have to figure only a few processed food companies could build enough brand appeal and recognition to move food across parsecs. Most food stuffs will be system specific, particularly since tastes would vary depending on the environment. Delicacies would be even more expensive/desirable away from their system of origin due to shipping costs alone.

IMTU, food is a commidity, but only because several of the sector's major worlds have severly degraded environments or suffer from extreme over population. Food companies even war on each other to protect genetically engineered stock or even market share!

Back when I was on the TML I recall a certain Larsen Whipsnade pushing the benefits of Groat burgers...
and getting in trouble with the Regina constabulary for attempting to barbeque a groat at a deserted space port somewhere on planet...

As for T20/COTI, I'm rather surprised that Trader Jim hasn't come out with COFFEE JUICE CAKE yet; I mean, it is a sort of obvious tie in, you know.

GT Far Trader has the survival ration bar, the description of which sounds allot like the chocolate Slim Fast@ bars that I've had [tastes like sawdust].

Who could ever forget 2300's Ratdogs!
Hmmm, Protein,Yumm!

Maybe more as I think about it, or not graemlins/omega.gif

Strange somone should mention Trade Jim.
On one of the other threads they are selling Vorpal Bunnies Burgers and VB Jerrky.
I think the thread is a message from the government of Avelon.

Actually, hunter brings up an excellent point: Liquid Refreshment! Aside from Hava-Cola, Sparky Cola (from the Andromeda TV show) and Slurm (Futurama) what do we have for drinks?

In the ISS URSULA online campaign, we also have the soft drink BLUE SUN, from the 'Firefly' series. It's become a running gag of sorts as my character's favorite beverage.

Beverages. Most agrarian cultures on earth have ber, wine,or both. Also vegatable infusions like coffee, tea, or cola. That won't change.

Drinks? Don't mind if I do...

You can't have a bar that doesn't serve Sirian Panther Sweat! Where would Slippery Jim drink?
(Fill in the blank) Ale and FITB Wine are old standards.

For those who take their ripple straight up (you know who you are, it's just that you won't put down your bottle of Mad Dog to reply!) there's Old Misjump!

And quit griping about yer frikken number of stars, some of us abrasive @$$es don't have any

Guys, guys...

I can't believe that no one remembered from Hitchiker's guide that ALL CIVILIZATIONS have a drink pronounced 'gin and tonic' (however spelled), and that each and every one of them is a different concoction altogether!

Drinks: I like to steal from John Ostrander's 'Grimjack' and inflict 'Olde Minke' on my would be tough guy players.

Snack foods:hmm well. I once remember trying to come up with an alien looking vargr dish. so I invented this cubes of raw dripping meat thingy on a motorised plate thingy that made the cubes jump around and actualy get airborne. The Goal was to spear individual cubes with a single claw.

Non - vargr could get a claw prosthesis.

Invariably some PC would turn the motor on the plate to '10'

Insta-noodles ala Cowboy Bebop (there's a good sequence with them at the start of the movie). Like those Insta-Lunch things except you pull a tab, wait a bit, and pull the lib.

Asu tends to snack on Natto (much to the nasal agony of the rest of the crew) and Wasabi Peas (great for fire-breathing practice) but those are RL snacks. (she's 1/4 Japanese)

Oh and Vargr or Hiver, etc. run "Chinese" restaurants. I figure if even Ireland can have one practically everywhere, so can the 3I.
:D

Of course Guinness still exists though of course it doesn't taste as good as Guinness back in Ireland. ;)

I'm sure that Terrans have imported JOLT to the outer reaches of the Imperium - all the sugar and twice the caffeine of your regular cola! (Also useful for cleaning windshields, grav lifter parts, and small arms components....)

The inventer of Havacola[TM] In our last session, Sgt. Stiles had a rum and Havacola with his dinner (Rum and Blue Sun just isn't the same) at the Vargr "Chinese" resturant. The broiled rats were OK, tasted like Vilani Plains Fowl. They just needed some sort of sweet sauce to go with them.

Makes sense that it would go with rum...

Aside from that, I think it is safe to say that every bar, on every world, for every species will have some sort of salty snack in little dishs. And they will likely sell some sort of high protean snack (egg, sausage) that is pickled and spicy.

I suppose that in K'Kree space, vegetables might be a common snack. Though K'kree meat could always be classified an "exotic horse dish!"

From a recent game session:

Kaakaaraa Kola (like Vilani beer except it's soda; has a "kick" to it)

Aamarishiraa soup (Tomato with Vilani herbs); to non-Vilani it seems hot; like having Paprika or similar but with more colors in the herbs

I also made up hexagonal crackers (no I didn't give them a name...yet) and a similar hexagonal spice grinder. Since that was off the cuff I'm wondering if there is a predominant Vilani shape. Really I was just going for something a little different.

the names are derived from the excellent Your Name in Vilani (http://tribble.dreamhost.com/vilani.html) page.

First one I used coca cola, second tomato soup. Hey if Vulcan's use Campbell's from a can I figure Vilani can as well. tongue.gif ;) graemlins/file_23.gif

I've heard from long haul Traders that Terran tinned dog food is snapped up like foie gras and truffles in Vargr space. They especially like the 'rabbit meaty chunks in succulent jelly' variety.

We somehow moved off topic to drinks, but everyone has neglected to mention Scout Brew

Scout Brew Description (http://foreven.com/libdat/libdat/s/ScoutBrew.htm)

I was always under the impression that there was some kerosene involved, but the above link doesn't mention it.

As for food, once my players resupplied from a remote alien base (droyne I think). The only real conception these particular aliens had of human civilization was from old terran TV. The player ship ended up with quite a bit of Lucky Charms (preserved with TL15 tech, of course). The enginner kept stealing the yellow stars and hiding them in his quarters.

Groat jerky was another popular one in our group, since we tended to stick to the spinward marches.
