The PTBs at my work don't seem to mind if I post on message boards all day (perhaps if they knew just how much...) but we're actively forbidden from using chats and IM. So I'd have to do it from home, on my painfully slow dial-up connection, which just ain't cool...

Its a thought.... normally I'm all gung ho for chat, but something is nagging me to use the COTI site as much as possible so that it reaches critical mass and contributes to the Traveller community. I'm always invisible on Yahoo and the like anyway, otherwise I get blasted by porn spam and girls from China wanting to chat me up, learn English, or both. But I'm Doomhunk anywhere you care to look except ICQ.

September 27th, 2002, 12:33 AM
ICQ: is an Internet Chat program. I Think you can just download from their website. especially if you don't want the latest version.

ICQ is just one of many 'chat' programs (like MicroSoft Network Messenger, Or whatever Yahoo calls it's chatter.)

I hope people have ICQ, I don't have enough memory and clock speed to maintain multiple chat proggies so I stick with ICQ.

If enough of us come on together I'll create a chat room in MSN...I think u jus need to pick a nick name to log on to the site. It'll be in the "interests" section under "Traveller T20".
So all we gotta do is determine a time!

I'm online all day everyday here at work, but our IT dept has expressly forbidden installing/using any kind of IM, and I'm already on their s**t-list so I don't want to do anything more to antagonize them.

I finally broke down and installed MSN messenger on the computer at home. I usually don't spend much time online at home, but if given a reason I could be online anytime from, say, 5:30pm local (1:30am GMT) on. Or pretty much anytime at all during weekends...

I don't get any... the only really annoying thing I experience is the 'bots that pop into the room and send you a whisper/IM/Message with some advert for 'The Best Porn Site in All Creation!' But the 'whisper' service can be disabled in the chat preferences for each user which will prevent any private chatting between two people.

Lavasoft.com makes a FREE program called "ad aware" that can scan for spy ware and can stop those processes that get snuck onto your computer when you load something fromt he web soemtimes.

The program is free and you'll be amazed at how many little things they can sneak onto your system.

I wasn't blaming you for leaving. I never saw you show up. (on the gripping hand My coumpter desided that was a good time to crash and it took a few hours to get it back up[ No snide or low remarks])
What I was going to blame you for was abandoning Erin to us for entire night. Now I don't think she suffered any so I think you are off the hook, this time.

Can someone tell me what time you mean when you say Eastern Standard time, I asked before but nobody answered. I think it's UTC-5, but I'm still unsure (could be 6 or 4 depending where on the east coast US that time zone is).

Anyhoo - It doesn't really matter to me, I'll be curled up in my cosy little futon by then preparing for another fun filled day at the office (1pm sunday at Z-5 is 4am monday here at z+10).

Raise a virtual beer for me.

Mink, you posted this one hour ago my time (CST). The time posted here on the site is EST. Eak lives in the EST zone of the USA. From London Time/UK, we're behind them by approx seven hrs. ( I get to add another hour being one time zone beyond that.9Its 1pm UK/London now fer example.

Hope that helps some more. And I shall, hoist a pint fer you-virtually ;)

Hey Mink!

Sorry about the time zone confusion.

If you're interested you can check with these sites for more information.

This one has more links to other good Time Zone information including a PDF which is current as of september.

http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/tzones.html

And this one has a nifty little setup that will tell you what time it is in several different time zones and cities, as well as your current time based on your computer clock.

http://www.maps.com/explore/timeclock/

Hope this helps!
Eak

P.S. If you like I can e-mail you a ziped archive of the page from the second link. I snagged it to my local drive and edited out all the crud nav bar stuff and changed the links so it'll work from a local source.

Danke Schon Tout la Monde

So EST is Z-5. I normally use www.timezoneconverter.com (http://www.timezoneconverter.com) but it is based on the city. That way I don;t need to know where the timezone borders are in countries arround the world. (It also handles daylight issues for me)

Did you all have a good chat? I lurked arround in the room till 10pm (7am EST) but it was still quiet (No Suprises there).

Next week I'll drop a line on entry/exit just in case there are others who "work" late on a sunday.
