It's quite interesting to look at the number of posts that people have made here (which you can look at in the directory (http://www.TravellerRPG.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=directory)).
For example, at the time of writing there are 5,614 registered members of Coti.
But out of that large number only:
1,592 of them have ever posted 1 or more posts (and 325 of those have only ever posted once in total).
632 of them have posted more than 10 posts here.
183 have posted more than 100 posts here.
21 have posted more than 1000 posts here.
That means that there are 4,022 members who either just spend all their time here lurking and reading posts (ie have never posted anything), or who signed up and then forgot about it and have never returned. I'd be kinda surprised if there are large numbers of people who read all the discusssions here and don't ever feel the urge to comment on them - that makes me wonder if most CotI subscribers are people who just don't ever read the board. Is there any way to see how many times people have visited the boards?
Just goes to show that despite there being so many members here, only about 3% - less than 200 people - contribute to most of the discussions. That's something to keep in mind when you do polls or when you say that everyone agrees with you ;)

I wonder if there's anyone out there who maintains two or more accounts so that they can get involved in heated discussions or even argue with themselves just to keep things interesting?
or is it that I'm seeing conspiracies within conspiracies (well, it is the Traveller way of things ;) )

I will admit I have two accounts here. But, like Malenfant, when I created this account I stopped using the old account.
Unlike Malenfant, the reason I switch was because I used my "real" userid instead of my "Traveller" userid. I would have just kept the original account if I could have changed the userid, but the BBS won't let me do that.
I wish I could merge the accounts and keep my old CID. I moved back 100 or so with the second account. Failing that, I would gladly delete the old account, but I couldn't do that either.

I have two because of complications logging in at work and at home (don't ask). No nefarious purpose though and they're obviously linked (Aristotle Kzin and Kzin Aquinas).

...Personally what happened is works web-screening software took a dislike to CotI/RPGrealms towards the end of last year so I can't access it at lunchtimes anymore. My home connection is (still!) a 56K Dial-Up and since the loss of access at lunch-times coincided with the "signal to noise" ratio in discussions seeming to deteriorate markedly#, I largely ceased bothering to post. I drop by to check the news, and keep up with roughly where things are headed, but I'd rather spend my online time elsewhere these days.

Isn't it fairly typical of lists and boards that the majority - often a vast majority - do not post? 1500 out of 5600 might even be good.
Now, I must say I'm more puzzled about the top posters, and how much time they must spend writing and reading posts (the QLI people aside). I barely and irregularly follow just a few of the topic groups, and I seldom find anything to comment on.

I've always tried to make my posts about quality and mostly in my case it's often a desire to help those with questions by offering my opinions and knowledge since I've been playing and playing with this game almost as long as the creators and through every version except GURPS.

Just did some quick math and the other aspect of the large volume posters, in may case at least, is time. I've been around here since early on too and my posts average less than 2 posts a day over that time smile.gif Hey, I'm over quota for today already, guess I get to go home early and take tomorrow off ;)
I wonder, and have wondered before, if some of the new citizens who don't post are just still catching up on the reading of all the posts that have gone before graemlins/file_21.gif
Hmm, what is the total post count?
I read every post the first year or more, but as the community grew to over a thousand and the topics began to diversify and specialize I have had to pick my interests. I still scan every post through the active topics list though smile.gif and take a peek in the Political forum now and then as well as sticking my nose in the Moot.
I wonder, and have wondered before, if some of the new citizens who don't post are just still catching up on the reading of all the posts that have gone before graemlins/file_21.gif

It's not about a race to the top though - it is quality, not quantity. I just pointed out the stats here because I thought it was interesting smile.gif .
I've always tried to make my posts about quality and mostly in my case it's often a desire to help those with questions by offering my opinions and knowledge since I've been playing and playing with this game almost as long as the creators and through every version except GURPS. [/QB]I try and write most of my posts so that they add something to the conversation. Sometimes I repeat myself (especially when discussions go on for a while and I forget that I've already said something ;) ). But I don't post purely for the sake of it (well, maybe once or twice to make an amusing comment, but that's it ;) ).

Originally, I was ScoutCadet469, and that's still my login. I changed my screen name to Sir Dameon Toth when I broke up with a girlfriend and she started stalking me on the Internet. Not kidding here. She followed me into every game I played on Yahoo Games making nasty comments to the people I was playing with and was e-mailing my friends pretending to be me, and posting to the forum of the website of the band I go out to see - even posting nasty messages about the drummer of the band. Hell hath no fury and all... I still sign my posts as Scout just to stay consistent. A while back I was in the Top 20 - now I'm at number 46. Once CotI was changed to show Peerage by number of posts, I quickly dropped down the list. I feel like I post some pretty good quality, but I've been known to get into light arguments. I've had a great time on this Forum since July of 2001. It's clearly my favorite, tho I occasionally post on the Star Wars list (those people can be real @$$holes) over on Wizards and the Pits of Evil forum for d20, and of course, the band forum I mentioned earlier. I'm sure I'd post more if I wasn't in JumpSpace (i.e. driving a truck and on the road) for most of the week.

As for post totals, I'm surprised to find myself on page 2. Since I don't have a computer at home and only post from work, I never thought that my post total would rank so high.

smile.gif Well to add a little more noise to the signal here I guess I do post some that some might call noise, but I try to keep that mostly on Random Static. Besides one posters noise is another's signal, and vice versa ;)
Pointing out the features of the board is not a bad thing, even if it does lead to a little noise in the upper signal band smile.gif
