hey - is it true that to "hit" something, you
have to roll 8 or more on two six sided dice
mayby using modifiers? is this a house rule??
who thought this one up?? what if i want to smack the guy sitting next to me because he hes just plain stupid - after all i am the GM. do i have to roll 8+ to do this??

If you are a player character and want to smack an N.P.C., or another player Character next to you YES! 8+ is the basic minimum required thow to hit. Some modifiers might include plusses, because your target might not see it comming, or minuses, Because your target may be a Martial artist, who is aware of your intentions.

If ,on the other hand, you're the GM; JUST REACH OVER THE SCREEN AND SMACK THAT DUMMY!

Why not switch to the DGP/Megatraveller task system?

To smack an annoying player for arguing about the rules:

Simple, (Dex, Brawling)(Uncertain)

Uncertain???

Either I smack him or I don't and I'll be pretty darn sure I did if I do. No uncertainty involved.

I am increasingly of the opinion that RPGs are by the nature of their creation subjective phenomenon. due to the interaction between game designers, game masters, and game players all definitions, rules, settings, and adventures are mutable in acordance with the uncertainty principle as expounded by Heisenburg. This is of course merely my point of view.

Uncertain in two senses

(a) your body might become blocked by the gaming table, thus causing you to miss...

(b) He might be a master of some ancient and deadly martial art and the outcome might be uncertain...

Not to hammer pendantically at a throwaway one-liner, but...

Those 'uncertainties' are represented by the DIE ROLL -- you can't be sure whether you'll succeed or not until you try the task. The 'Uncertain' qualifier is only for those tasks where even AFTER you've tried the task you can't tell if you succeeded or not (i.e. did I not find any traps because there weren't any traps to find or because I failed at my task-roll?).

Once again a thousand apologies for the pedantry -- sometimes I can't control myself http://www.farfuture.net/ixs/wink.gif
