Toys of the far future page 1

Whilst playing with my 1.5yr old son today, I reflected upon how so many toys have essentially remained the same. Their form may have changed but the content has remained the same (eg. he plays with planes and tractors whereas, a boy in the sixteenth century would have played with model birds & horses). HOWEVER, as he ages, that is going to change somewhat, being an old fart, I never really got into the whole console game systems thing (plus, I could afford it...RPGs were expensive enough). So as he ages, no doubt, he will get more and more VR games coming down the pipe.

In the never ending quest to find ways to liven Traveller up. What are the games of the Far Future going to be like? Other than the basic archetypes that have always existed?

Modern toys stink, by and large! NO Micronauts, weak ass themed lego... brr.. scary...

But you do have Stikfas (look it up) and Art Asylum's Star Trek toys.

GIJOE getting little and then the Pokemon Invasion has transformed children's toys into the lame hobby of plastic statue collecting. There need to be cool Action Figures for this game, and in general.

Adding to that, the ultimate non-playablility of some of these toys is appalling. They seem more like marketing exercises. Most console and computer games seem more like programmed fever dreams... zzz.

Kids have lost thier juice.

One of my girls favorite toys is a big wooden cat (~35-40#) on wheels...

Legos, or something similar, are likely to survive. Same for tinkertoys. (Magnetix is the modern rework of the tinkertoy idea.. kids just love em...)

I'm sure even in the 57th Century young kids will have more fun playing with the empty cardboard box than the toy that came in it!

3D VR Wargames.

Holodeck storybook (The kids play the parts of the characters in the story; Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Cinderella, Shrek, etc.)

The simple toys will stay, although the names will change. Dolls to action figures to mini androids. Stuffed animals to beani babies to stuffed animals to stuffed K'Kree. Toy horses to toy cars to toy starships. Toy guns to toy water guns to toy PGMP-15 extreme soaker with backpack reservoir.

VR games will come and go with the generations. What was cool for them as kids will be uncool for thier children. The cost of VR setups in out of the way colony worlds will make them scarce.

The item that children in the 57th Century will play with the most is...

... the BOX that that hi-tech toy came in.

Have fun,

Sylean Chess, aKa "Empire" or "Imperium" Chess.
(NOTE: I am going to actaully make this)

A one meter diameter hexagonal board with flat gameboard tiers, similar to chess squares, but may be hexagons. The board looks like a hexagonal step pyramid.

You must have at least three players, but it is better with six.

The board has a round outer ring, which is the players start point as "Personas" (the player's piece) This represents Space.

The first Tier, populated by Knights, is the Land Tier. Players in thier moves must try to get past the other players as they control the Knights to block the moving player in a team effort. All Knights can do is Delay progress of the Persona.
Knights are this game's pawns. Traditionally, this has a world surface map motif. Knights can move two hexes.

The Second Tier, populated by Barons, is the World Tier. Barons function like Knights, and can only Delay or Block Personae. This Teir has a planetary motif. Barons can move three hexes in any direction

The Third Tier, populated By Marquis, is the System tier. Marquis peices are few, but they can potentially Destroy a Persona when properly used in force. This tier has a Star System motif.
Marquis can move 4 hexes.

The Fourth Tier, Populated by Counts, is the County Tier. Counts can easily Destroy a Persona, if two can be put into the right position to strike by the opposing players remaining.
Counts can move Five hexes

The Fifth Tier, Populated by Dukes, Is the Chart Tier, Dukes can alone Destroy a Persona if in position. This teir should have subsector map like motifs. (planets connected by trade routes, say...) Counts can move six hexes.

The Imperial Tier is Populated by whoever makes it through the Peerage to become Emperor. The Imperial Sunburst is in the center of the top Tier. If only one Persona Remains, that person wins. If more than one, they must fight, with losers being Destroyed.

The last one Standing is "Emperor" of the game.

Destroy = YOu lose. Out of the game.

Delay = a move or series of moves designed to slow the progress to the Throne.

Sylean Chess is a social game, it combines chess with chinese checkers and a bit of "Odd man out". It is a children's game designed to familarize them with the workings of the Moot, indirectly.

Traditional Persona Piece Colors are Black, White, Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow

Moot pieces are commonly all Maroon, and the shape denotes the piece.

Footballs (the spherical type).

They've been around a long, long time here on Terra. I've no doubts at all that Brits travelling around the RoM would take a football with them... :D

Hate to disagree with the box idea, but I wonder if the box will survive. Notice how much comes in a plastic case that is destroyed opening it theese days? How long will the they last before something replaces them?
